Like for instance, the batter have to swing hard to hit the speeding ball coming towards him. What he is doing is appying to have more "momentum" which in opposite acted by the bat upon the ball.

Another case is the pitcher's. He make sure that the ball he pitches is thrown at a right angle and at a right speed. In this matter, the initial velocity of the ball (which is acted by the pitcher) and the angle of occurence affects where the ball drops.
