The tennis scoring system can seem very confusing at first, but I will try to explain. Each match consists of 3 sets (5 sets in men's pro tennis). Each set consists of games. A player must win 6 games, but must win by two. In other words, the score must be 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, or 6-0. If the score gets to 5-5, one of two things must happen:

1. One player must win two more games, so the score would be 7-5.

2. If the score goes to 6-6, a tiebreaker game is played. (The procedure for a tiebreak game will be explained later.) Confused yet? Here's how each game is scored: Each game consists of winning the best of 4 points, but again, the player must win by two points. The game starts at love (which means zero). When one player scores, the score becomes 15-love. Another score is 30-love, then 40-love, and scoring a point after this means the game is over. (If the other player scores, you would say 15-15, or 15-30, or love-40, etc.) However, if the score gets to 40-40 (also known as deuce), the scoring changes a little. Deuce means the players are tied. They would play the point, and if the server wins the point, the score becomes "ad-in," which stands for "advantage-in," meaning the server has the advantage because if they win the next point they win the game. If it's deuce and the server loses the next point, the score becomes "ad-out," meaning "advantage-out," because the advantage is to the other person, because if they win the next point they win the game. If the score is ad-in and the server loses, the score goes back to deuce (meaning they're tied again). If the score is ad-out and the server wins, the score goes back to deuce (again meaning they are tied). When a person wins a game, it counts as 1 of the 6 (or more) they must win, as explained above. Procedure for a Tiebreak game: (somebody else can explain this!) The scoring system for a typical tennis match is as follows: * To win the match players must win the best of 3 sets. If you win the first two sets, you win. If each player wins a set, you must play a third set. Grand Slam events like Wimbledon play the best of fove sets in the men's division. * To win a set, you must be the first to win six games and be ahead by two games. Thus a set score could be 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, but not 6-5. If the score was 6-5, the set would continue until the person either won 7-5 or the score was tied at 6-all. When the score is 6-all, a special game called a tiebreak is played. The rules of the tiebreak essentially are that the person who wins seven points first and is ahead by two points wins the tiebreak. This set score would then be recorded as 7-6. * To win an individual game the scoring goes as follows: No score or zero points is called "love." The next point is 15, the next 30, the next 40, and if you win the point after 40 and you are ahead by two points you have won the game. The game is extended if you are only ahead by one point. Thus if the score was 40-all (which has a special name called deuce but basically means that you are tied.) and you win the next point you have an advantage over your opponent but you have not won the game. If you win the point after having the advantage, you win the game. If your opponent wins this point, the score goes back to deuce and you continue the game until the person having the advantage wins the following point.

A tennis match is first to 2 out of 3 sets or in a grand slam it is 3 out of 5 sets. Each set is first to 6 games unless it gets to 6 to 6 and then you play a tiebreaker which consists of first person to 7(win by 2) and the first person who starts serving in the tiebreaker only serves once and then take turns serving two points until someone wins the tiebreaker. Each game consists of winning 4 points unless it gets to deuce. The first point you win is 15, second is 30, third is 40 and then if you have 40 and you win the point you win the game. If it becomes 40-40, then whoever wins the next point gets the advantage and must win one more point to win the game. If the person with advantage loses the point, the game goes to deuce(or 40-40) and starts over again.
