We don't, the Grand Canyon was carved out of the rock over thousands of years by a stream, and today is a national park and landmark. The destruction of parkland is a federal offense. Granted, white-water rafting, campers, tourists and pollution in the water all have their effect.

A large problem is litter. Nothing is worse than hiking for miles to a choice campsite only to find that it has been trashed by someone who has no respect for others or for natures beauty. The basic rule for camping is LNB (Leave Nothing Behind) or even better, LNT (Leave No Trace).
