Roman entertainment has one thing in common with present day entertainments, and that's is a sense of competition. They had chariot races, we have horse racing, harness racing, auto racing; they had gladiatorial contests, boxing and Wrestling, we have boxing and wrestling. Their poetry reading was competitive, we have poetry contests; their theater performances were also competitive, especially during festival time, our theater performers compete for awards, i.e. Tonys, Grammies, Oscars, etc.
