The fastest man is Usain Bolt who holds the world record in the 100 meter dash at 9.69 seconds. That would work out to about 23 MPH.

1616 meters in a mile

1616/100=16.16

16.16 x 9.69 = 156.59 seconds in a mile

156.59/60= 2.6 minutes

60 minutes/2.6 minutes = 23 MPH

Actually Usain Bolt has not beaten Tyson gay in a race since the 2008 Olympics and that was because of an injured hamstring that Gay received qualifying for the Olympics....Meaning Tyson Gay is the worlds fastest man

As of 20 August 2008, Usain Bolt is the the world's fastest man with a 200 meter sprint of 19.30 seconds, giving an average speed of 10.36 meters per second. There are 1609.344 meters in a mile, so 10.36 m/s / 1609.344 m/mi = 0.0064374 miles/second. There are 3600 seconds in an hour, so 0.0064374 mi/s * 3600 s/hr = 23.175 miles/hour. Usain Bolt clocked an *average* speed of 23.175 mph during his world record run, however he may have achieved speeds of 23-27 mph in the early part of the sprint.

Donovan Bailey's instantaneous speed, presumably measured by radar, during a 100 m sprint in the 1996 Olympics was 27.1 mph, although it is unclear what the measuring error of the device was, and it may have factored in the forward motion of his arms. His average speed for that race was 22.7 mph. We can reasonably conclude that Bolt can achieve speeds within the 23-27 mph range.
