My GUESS is they can reach up to 80 mph and very
possibly even faster. If I find the answer, I will try and get back here to post it.
After further research, I have found two sources both quoting fastest
downhill speeds at 40 to 50 mph. So I was wrong about 80 mph +
But this still may not be absolutely correct.

I finally discovered that speed skiers in sporting events
can reach over 150 mph!
But I suppose average skiers on normal ski slopes usually
don't top 50 mph.

Just off the slopes and I have a speedometer app for my blackberry. It is fairly accurate.
I topped out at 68 km.h or about 42mph (I am an upper intermediate and the hill is not the highest so I am sure I could push it a bit higher.) I bet 50 is doable.
The pros on the big Downhill like Bode Miller hit 140 km/h

1. Professional or amateur?
If you are a professional skier your skiing speed can go up to 130 km/h (80 mph). You will not find someone skiing that fast out of the ski trail.
Specially if you are a beginner, you don't have to worry about speed.
2.Cathegory?
In professional skiing, there are a few categories. There is slalom, giant slalom, super g and downhill. The last one is the fastest and it is here that competitors reach a speed of over 80 mph. Super G is not as fast, and it continues that way down to slalom, which is considered the slowest skiing discipline.
