Best Answer

Too many variables.

- what kind of shape you are in.

- distance

- wind direction

- weather

- riding solo or in a group

- fitness of the riders you are with

- etc, etc

- Elite group rides (amature) 30-50 miles. avg about 23-26 mph

- Decents on mountains, pro riders can get up 70 mph

- Pro races? depends on race/type of race.

- Usually one classics such as Paris-Roubaix avg speed is around 26 mph

for approx 257 km race distance. (about 6 hours in the saddle)

You can have the fastest/lightest bike in the world, but if you don't have the engine (legs) to ride it, and insane tolerance for pain for hours on end, no bike is fast.

There's really no short answer, as it depends on what kind of race bike it is, and how/where it is ridden. (crap answer because it doesn't help)

Typically, Tour de France riders will average 40-45km/hr depending on whether they are getting the wind broken ahead of them by other riders. This would be on a longer leg. On a short time trial leg of 50km, they might average 55km/hr.

A fit recreational rider can average 30km/hr on a long trip and sprint up to about 65km/hr on a flat roadway with no wind.

Downhill rides have been known to top 110 km/hr.

In the sprints, they can hit about 60 KMH/40 MPH for a few seconds. On long descents, they can reach 50+ MPH/80+ KMH.
