An ultramarathon is technically defined as any distance longer than the standard 26.2 mile (42.195) marathon. The 50 km race is usually considered the shortest ultramarathon with distances from 30-100 miles very common.

An Ultra Marathon is any running event longer than the traditional 26.2 miles. Although some people consider marathons covering extreme elevations such as the Pike Peak Marathon to be an "Ultra Marathon".
