Start at the top and work down The edges of the tape will provide friction to stop one's hands slipping down the stick. If you start at the bottom and work up, there will be no resistance to such manual glissando.

he uses fat white tape, starts mid blade and goes to the toe. for the top of his stick he rips a normal roll of tap in half and uses once half to to get a medium size knob, then he takes red grip tape and tapes about two hand lengths down the shaft. then he puts about an inch of sock tape to hold it in place.
