The sound of a basketball going through the net is a "swish" or a "swoosh." Even for a shot straight down the middle, the ball must rub against the net. The sound is made by the net material sliding down the sides of the ball, which is amplified by resonance with the air-filled interior (a similar effect is heard by rubbing the surface of a drum). This is often more audible because the sound vibrations are carried through the hoop to the backboard.
