Soccer became a a major international sport since the second world war. Because all that is needed to actually play the game is a football (soccer ball) and something to represent the goal posts each end of a playing area the game can happen anywhere. The game was reputed to have been played in the ww1 in no mans land between british and german soldiers on chrsitmas day.
