First find the link that has a sliding locking clip on it, it should be a flat black clip that slides onto specially grooved link pins on one side of the chain. You should be able to slide this clip off and the grooved link pin will slide out of the mating chain link letting the chain come apart.
Next you can remove a link off one end of the chain by holding it in a vice and grinding off the tip of the punched link pin then punching it out with a hammer and punch. Make sure you remove it so tha the locking link can re-assemble.
The chain can be reassembled by reinserting the grooved pin and locking it with the sliding clip.
If there is no link like described above then you will need a chain breaker witch slides the pin out. You don't wan to slide it out all the way though because they are extremely hard to put back in. Just slide it out enough to take the other link out of it.

I strongly recommend you to get a special tool called a chain breaker. There are improvised methods too, but they're all fiddly and awkward. Unless your nearest bike store is really far away I strongly suggest that you get the proper tool instead. They usually come with instructions anyway, which can be helpful to you.
First, the best way to do this is with the proper tool. This is called a chain removal tool, or chain break tool. This is assuming you don't have a sliding master-link. You basically push the pin out of the flat link without bending the flat metal (that's where the tool comes in handy). Be careful not to completely remove the link or you won't be able to put it back in. Just push it far enough to bend the chain and pry the link away from the pin. I push it almost all the way out until only a tiny bit is left in the inside link. Then when you go to put it back together, you just press it back in. Here, you definitely need the tool. It holds the flat link flat, and doesn't allow it to bend, ruining the link. Press it in, and bend the chain side to side to loosen it up so it doesn't kink up over the gears.
As a side note, if the chain is acting up or your gears are skipping even after you adjust everything right, the chain has stretched and needs to be replaced. They wear out because of improper lubrication, cleaning, cross chaining, and normal wear and tear.

∙ 15y agoThe 'key' is to find the 'master link'. All other chain links are permanently attached, but the master link is designed to be taken apart. You can typically pry open the cover of the master link with a screwdriver or pliers. Once that is done, press the link open with a punch, hammer, pliers, whatever it takes.

∙ 14y agoPreferably you need a chain breaking tool, which'll let you push out one of the pins in a fairly controlled manner. Keep in mind that Shimano(the leading brand) doesn't recommend re-use of a pin that's been pushed out. Get a quick link(link that can be disassembled) or get the special reattachment pins from a bike store. If your chain isn't Shimano you don't have to be that picky. If you insist on doing w/o a chain breaker it IS POSSIBLE to remove a link with a hammer, a drift punch, some backing and some skill and stubborness. It'll take you 4x as long though.

The chain is secured using 2 different methods on pretty much any bike(with a chain). Choice 1 is with a master link using a clip. This will be the only link that looks a bit different than the others. Usually facing the outside of the bike although it is possible to have it facing inwards. If you have a master link with clip you will need to use a pair of pliers or a flathead screwdriver to force the clip off then once removed you can remove the link plate behind the clip. Choice 2 is on many street bikes and this is a pressed on plate master link. Basically it uses the link pins like a rivet. Are bike chains fixable?
If it's just snapped off - sure. I recommend a chain breaker tool to remove the broken link and then a so-called master link or quicklink to put it back together. To buy the correct quicklink you need to know the width of the old chain. Easiest is to bring it to the store. Do note that depending on where the chain snapped, and how long it was to begin with, losing a link might have made the chain too short. In that case you'll have to replace it instead.
