I have had very good success with a free web site called Halhigdon.com. This is a person that is an authority in runnin many distances and has held US records for certain age groups. His site will allow you to download training plans for various distances 5 k - marathons as well as to pick out a plan for a beginner, intermediate or advanced. I like his plans as they allow the runner to have hard days followed by easy days, track days and hill days and usually one day off for rest. I have rarely found a person that follows his training plan to be hurt. Some plans are so "advanced" that the runner can not get to the starting line without an injury. Most of his plans require 10 - 18 weeks of training.
To prepare, you have to train for a few month's, or a long time. Always, always, always, stretch first before you run. To train, start your training with short distances, then as you progress, you can start running longer distances, then you will be able to run a 5K easily.

I am organizing a 5K road race in Illinois. Costs about $2500 to get everything rolling for a first time race. Hope this helps.
20 minutes is an average tome for a 5k race.
10k is 6.2 miles so 5k is 3.1miles
There is no such thing. A marathon is a distance race that is 26.2 miles in length.
Age is of very little importance to running a 5K race. As long as you are in good shape and are confident in your ability to complete your goal, you are able to take part in a 5K race.
3.1 miles :D
3.10685 miles
200 meters
5000 meters
Stupid question...
3.1 Miles
