You can only get drafted if you're in Canadian collages or if you're Canadian, American usually try their lock with the NFL first so it's kind of pointless for the cfl teams to draft Americans, if the NFL draft doesn't work out they sign through free agency to the cfl.

Canadian football and American football have more similarities than differences, but the differences are indeed considerable and do make for a different game. If a Canadian football player and an American one were standing side by side in full uniform, they would appear virtually identical. There is a kickoff to start each half, and one following each touchdown. There are huddles and downs, handoffs and passes, interceptions and fumbles, punts, etc. The offence must advance 10 yards for a first down. The scoring is the same, with one significant exception. (See my answer to that question above.) Perhaps the two most significant differences are (a) there are only three downs in Canadian football, as opposed to four downs in American football, and (b) the Canadian field is much larger than the American field. In Canada, there are 110 yards from goal line to goal line (100 in the USA); the Canadian field is 65 yards wide (about 53.3 in the USA); and the Canadian end zones are 20 yards deep (10 in the USA). Each Canadian team has 12 players on the field (11 in the USA), the additional player being a back. All backs may be in motion at the snap of the ball. The Canadian game is somewhat more "wide open" than the American game. There are usually more passes thrown and more points scored in a Canadian game, but not remarkably more. There are no touchbacks or fair catches. A kicking team is not allowed to "down" a punt, and the kicking team must not come within five yards of the punt receiver until the receiver has touched the ball. If a kick receiving team fails to run a punt or missed field goal attempt out of its own end zone, the other (kicking) team is awarded one point. (I cover this in more detail in my answer to that question above.) The goal posts are on the goal line. The "neutral zone" between the offensive and defensive lines is one yard. The Canadian Football League consists of an eastern and a western division, each having four teams. The CFL season begins in June, and is half over by Labor Day. There are eastern and western divisional playoffs: semi-final games between between the second and third place teams; and final games between the first place team and the Survivor of the semi-final. The Grey Cup Game (the championship) is between the survivors of the eastern and western finals. It is usually played on the last Sunday in November or the first Sunday in December. Canadian university football begins around Labor Day and the Vanier Cup Game (the championship) is played within a week of the Grey Cup Game. There are divisional playoffs at the university level, leading to the Vanier Cup game, the winning team being the undisputed national champions.

Steps to Playing For a CFL Team

  1. Start off lower; join a local team.

  2. Keep practicing, the CFL is tough.

  3. Once you get better, try to work your way up.

  4. If you can make it, you should be in AAA soon.

  5. In AAA, you'll need to have some luck. If you have some luck, you may get scouted.

  6. Then, if you have enough luck to be drafted, then that's great!

  7. Keep working; most of the time they won't take you until you've played a few minor league years.

  8. If they still like the way you play, and they need the position you play, they'll call you up.

So as you can see, to make the CFL, it takes not only talent, but luck.

Only the officials `work` the game, one of which, known as the Referee takes primary charge over the game and all other officials. He will position himself behind the offensive team. Second in command is the official known as the Umpire behind the defence. There are also sideline officials and deep defensive officials whose numbers depend on complexity of the game and age of players. Player safety is the number one concern of each official and is paramount to all else.

Typically there are a minimum of 3 officials, the third is the Headlinesman

additional crewmembers are increased by the following assignments:

Line Judge (4 officials)

Back Umpire (5 officials)

Back Judge (6 officials)

Side Judge (7 officials )

There are also a number of minor officials working the game required are

stick crew of 3 of which one will handle the downsbox under the direction of the headlinesman and referee.

a timekeeper

optional minor officials comprise a backup timer and a picket (4th stick) which will line up on the opposite side of the downsbox, a penalty card marker and a score keeper.

Skills used in Canadian football?

The CFL focuses more on speed and quickness rather than brute strength as in the NFL. Many CFL players are talented (they have excellent football skills) but are considered too small and undersized to play in the NFL. Many players who were originally thought to be too unskilled to play in the NFL have proved their skills in the CFL and have had successful NFL careers thereafter. Extremely speedy players enjoy the much less cramped field in the Canadian game, which favours their style of play.
