With great great difficulty, im a mechanic and i can tell you that these are sods to do. Its slap bange behind the centre console and heater box has to be taken out in order to get the matrix out. Start by taking out the glovebox and footwell cover and take out the motor by twisting it anticlockwise, take out fan housing and box (beware there is a bolt in the engine bay holding the back of the housing to the car which people easily break). once housing out of way heater box nuts have to be undone (engine bay again 10mm nuts) the rest is torture to you hands as you try to get the box separated and out. But please make sure you do disconnect the heater matrix hoses before you start lol. Good luck you will need it plus plenty of patience and cups of tea. :-)

This is a common complaint with mk2 Golfs, most of which were fitted with a heater matrix bypass valves to prevent the heater matrix from bursting under certain conditions. These bypass valves can fail, cutting off supply to the heater matrix resulting in no heat. Either replace the valves or remove them and fit a heater matrix from a mk3 Golf. These are stronger units and don't require bypass valves.
