Play 3 rounds of Golf, total the amount you are over par, and divide by 3, then round up. This is roughly your starting handicap. The handicap system is a lot more advanced, it takes CSS into account and you get reduced by or increased by decimal points depending on how you play and depending on your handicap category.
There are steps to identify your handicap. According to Golflink blog, the steps are the following:
Step 1. Assemble your 12 most recent 18-hole golf scores
Step 2. Look up the course rating and slope for each of the rounds. Write it down in a scorecard.
Step 3. Now, subtract the course rating from your score at that course. Determine each 12 differentials.
Step 4. Then Divide each differential by each slope and multiply the result by 113.
Step 5. Add up the lowest 10 answers from step 4 then divide that answer 10 or get the average. Then multiply that figure by .96.
That's it. You've just determine your Handicap :)
You need to be a member of a club to get a real handicap index. That could mean an organization like Augusta National Country Club, or a group that forms at the local muni. An important principle is that it has to be a group that plays together regularly, so that the members can keep an eye on each other in order to maintain the integrity of the system.
The handicap can not go lower than 0 or "scratch" and does not go over a certain piont. You determine your handicap by however many over you are. If you were +5 your handicap would be 5.
There is really no need for one. But do 3 rounds, then divide the total number of shots over par by 3 and that is your handicap.
Whatever your handicap is you take it off your final score.
e.g. final score=82, handicap= 12
82-12=70 giving you a nett score of 70

This is where someones handicap is less than 0. When you have your gross score you actually add your handicap on to calculate your nett score.
No. A true USGA handicap takes into consideration the tees being played. The slope rating and course rating which are used to calculate your handicap are different for each tee.
