Faster, or more powerful? Faster: adjust governor speed (increase spring tension). Engine WILL explode eventually if set beyond factory no-load speed. More power: deck head, bigger carb, racing alcohol fuel, etc. Gauranteed to destroy engine. Could be fun while it lasts, though... If you're on a go-kart, definitely try a torque converter. It can make a 5 horse do the work of an 8 easy, and playing with sprocket sizes a little can really make it jump!
By going really fast over the lawn, one isn't going to cut very much grass. Speed isn't the answer in mowing a lawn ... the rotating blades can only chop so much at a time, hence why the riding mowers usually travel rather slowly. What's the hurry?
