Pressure sensors are used to determine times. In addition, video cameras recording at 2,000 frames per second are used to accurately determine winners in the event of a very close "photo finish"

The swimmers get into the start position and then there is a loud beep when the clock starts, this signals the swimmers to dive in. Once the swimmers have swum the correct number of laps they hit the wall which has a pad on it which will stop the clock for your lane and tell you how fast you swam.

Swimming i judged by who touches the wall first at the end of whatever distance the swimmers are supposed to swim. swimming is also timed by officials and a pressure sensing pad on the wall.

I hope this helps.

There is a tiny switch attached to the trigger of the starting pistol. It starts the clock as soon as it detect the trigger has been pulled. The clock runs until one of the competitors breaks an electronic beam at the finish line.

Why is swimming timed by milleseconds?

Several races have come down to one one-hundredth of a second to determine gold and sliver.Three races in the previous two Olympics have come down to one one-hundredth of a second. They are:Men's 50 meter freestyle at the 2004 Olympic gamesWomen's 50 meter freestyle at the 2008 Olympic gamesMen's 100 meter butterfly at the 2008 Olympic gamesAll of those events are sprint events meaning the pace is very fast and there is almost no room to "pull away". That results in very close finishes in which any of 8 competitors has a shot at the gold.If swimming was timed at any other margin, there would be alot of room for multiple winners. Also, that is not precises and that could be a huge problem.
