Last year was a rough season in a lot of ways. The flyers got off to a decent start, but began to lose a ton in late November, December, and into January. Their coach (John Stevens) was fired in December, and Peter laviolette was brought in.

He didn't do much better for a long time. He tried to implement a new, aggressive style system at a time when the flyers were playing a lot of games and didnt have much practice time to work on laviolettes style. Things started to look up after February, as the flyers began to make a real push for the playoffs, but lost a few key games at the end of the season which would have allowed them to clinche a playoff spot.

On the last day of the season, they faced the New York Rangers. They won in a shootout and took the 7th seed in the east.

The playoffs went much better. In the first round they faced the 2 seeded devils, who the flyers actually beat 5 times in 6 regular season games. They beat the devils in 5 games, and never really seemed to be outmatched by New Jersey.

They next faced the 6th seeded bruins, who had just beaten the sabres and eventual vezina trophy winner Ryan miller. The flyers lost the first three games to the bruins, and all of the games were really close, hard fought games.

Simon gagne returned from a lower body injury for game 4, and he played a pivotal role during the rest of the series. Gagne scored in overtime to win game 4 and scored the game winning goal in game 7 to complete the comeback. Of the last 4 games (which the flyers won all 4), only game 5 was lopsided (the flyers won 4-0); all the other games were also very close.

The flyers rode the momentum from the bruins series and beat the canadiens pretty handily. Michael leighton (who returned from an injury to find his starting spot filled by Boucher, but got to start again after Boucher was injured during the bruins series) posted 3 shutouts during the series and was excellent. The flyers won 4 games to 1.

They then faced the Blackhawks in the Stanley cup finals, and split the first four games, all of which were very close. The flyers lost big in game five, and lost the series in overtime in game 6.

This was a long way of saying last season looked like one to forget for a long time; the flyers were losing a lot and backed into the playoffs, but because of the playoff run they made, and the many memories I now have from spring last year (Boucher being applauded by the fans, the comeback against Boston, gagne's return, beating the devils in the playoffs, leightons shutouts, giroux's overtime winner against the hawks, a lot of Kate smith and Lauren hart, JVR's awesome performance in game 7 against the bruins, flyers fans singing ole ole against the canadiens, laperriere sacrificing his face just to block a shot, then getting a standing ovation later in the playoffs, richards' short handed goal against the canadiens, carcillo (of all people) scoring in overtime to beat the devils, among other things), I would say last year was a great year to be a flyers fan.
