The tarheels mascot is a ram. The reason why its a ram is because they used to have a player called the battering ram so a ram was better suited then a guy with a battering ram.
In 1924 the Univ of North Carolina did not have a mascot and the head cheerleader at the time Vic Huggins came up with the ram as a mascot after the star of the 1922 football team Jack Merritt. Rams. The actual animal they use is a Rambouillet ram which is big in West Texas & the university Ag department deals with alot in their research. The official animals mascot name is always Dominic. Not sure how many there have been. Roscoe is the name of the costumed character that shows up to basketball games ect & works with the cheerleaders.
