The Cardinals had a few names before settling on the iconic name they use today. In 1899 they were known as the "Perfectos". Legend has it that St. Louis journalist Willie McHale, on Opening Day that year, overheard a lady in the stands exclaim “what a lovely shade of Cardinal,” in reference to the trim on team's uniforms. McHale ran with it in his column and the Perfectos became the Cardinals in 1900.
