Well it depends on what you mean by popular. Millions of people watching famous? Most popular game of the time? But as we know the game as inveted in Canada [yes that is arguable, it was possible England did. And NO Minnesota did NOT invent hockey. Sorry Gophor fans], and had very different rules. But it stated to become more popular in late 1800s (i.e. 1895ish) to around early 1900s (i.e. 1910ish). Not only is it possible that England invented hockey but also Scotland and U.S.A have been called the inventors. But we now know that for sure it was not invented anywhere else but Canada.
