Directly after the Red Sox's 1907 season, their owner John I. Taylor nicknamed his ballclub the "Red Sox" after the red socks (also known as stockings) that they wore as a part of their uniform. "Sox" was chosen after a newspaper needed a friendly form of the word stockings that would fit on the page for a Chicago White Sox article. Before this, they were simply known as the "Boston Americans."
