I don't know a whole lot about Tyson other than what fans told me about him. I never actually boxed; I was challenged by a Mexican guy to do the training for only one month, he never actually goaded me into getting into any serious fights or anything but, he insisted so that I would learn to apreciate the sport. Even if you do it for only a trivial, insignificant amount of time, when you go to a boxing gym, or rather at least a place that was a "make shift" boxing gym, you run into a lot of hardcore fans and Tyson worshipers. Don't need to watch documentaries; you learn about fighters just from word of mouth. So, to answer your question how did Tyson's boxing career get started? I believe he smacked the crap out of a large 18 year old bully who was giving him a hard time. True enough, Tyson was big when he was a kid, but, the bully in question was huge, I think the story goes that he was 6'4, 240 lbs, aged 18, while Tyson was only 12. That little "scuffle" got Cus D'Mato's attention, and, the moment he spotted Tyson he knew he had the next heavyweight champion of the world. I'm not 100% on this though; you'll have to look up documentaries in the "special interest" section of your video store provided its big enough.

For Mike Tyson, fighting was a matter of survival in the rough neighborhood of his youth. His fighting skills were discovered and developed by coaches.
