I'm assuming you know he played for the National Basketball Association (NBA). But his NBA salary (though it was large) contributed little to his personal fortune compared to the cash he raked in from endorsement deals (Nike, Gatorade and McDonalds to name a few) he was chosen by these companies to represent their products because he was arguably the most gifted athlete of the 20th century (I would rank Lance Armstrong one place higher). --And by acclamtion (claimed by NBA.com) the greatest basketball player ever. MJ signing with Nike early in his career marked perhaps the largest step towards globalizing the Nike brand and turning them into the Multi-billion dollar corporation they are today. So MJ benefited from these companies just as much as they benefited from him. BTW, sorry for the essay answer-- but you really outta know this stuff...
