CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THE 1,000,000TH SUBSCRIBER TO BELIEVE THAT THE Olympics HAS MORE COUNTRIES THAN THE NUMBER OF COUNTRIES IN EXISTANCE. There are around 240 countries in the world. Some of these have not been recognized universally for reasons I am unaware of. It may be that a small portion of countries that participated in the Olympics are not members of the United Nations, for example, Montenegro, American Samoa or Macao. As time goes by, more and more states will become countries, so it won't be long before Mount Athos is declared independent.

Not every country competes in the Olympics, and in 2012, 192 nations have sent athletes. The remaining twelve 'countries' are either territories or unrecognized countries allowed to compete. There are two unrecognized nations competing: Palestine and Taiwan. There are ten territories competing on their own: American Samoa(US), Aruba(Netherlands), Bermuda(UK), British Virgin Island(UK), Cayman Islands(UK), Cook Islands(NZ), Guam(US), Hong Kong(China), Puerto Rico(US), and Virgin Islands(US). There is also a team of independent athletes competing under the Olympic flag.

There are more National Olympic Committees that participate in the Olympics than there are countries in the world. This is because several dependent or autonomous territories throughout the world have their own separate Olympic committees other than the country they're officially ruled by. For example, Puerto Rico has their own Olympic committee instead of being a part of the US's. Another example is that the British Virgin Islands have their own Olympic committee other than being a part of the United Kingdom's. There are 204 National Olympic Committees but only 196 sovereign nations.
