The most common answer is that begining in the mid 1900's, more players of color were allowed into the sports. However, these players were usually only the best players, such as Arthur Ashe Jr., Roberto Clemente and Jim Brown. The sports began to take a major turn after civil rights were won by Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights leaders. Minorites were then allowed to play in most major American sports. This is when players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, and Walter Payton began to play. This not only drew in many more non-white players but also non-white viewers. Of course this was also affected by technology innovation, but non-white playing was also a major factor. This led to the growth of United States sports viewership and changed American sports into multi-billion dollar associations and leagues. Back to the point, there are now more non-white players than white, which had been the opposite at the beginning of the century. If you want specific info, go to the link below to learn about percentages of non-white players in American sports.
