There are lots of things that they could use them for. They could keep figures on the amount of matches they played in, or amount of time in each match they played, how much they've scored, how well their team is doing, figures for their training, doing up schedules for their training, tracking their weight or fitness level. All of these and many other things. Anything that has numbers can be put into a spreadsheet, so there are so many things they could do with one.
