Well in the NHL theres only really one answer, Wayne Gretzky. Ever since he retired the whole league retired his number in honor of the great one. So nobody has been able to wear the number 99 ever since.

Number 99 was Wayne Gretzky's jersey number. There were others before him, but there will not be any after. Wayne's number 99 was the first and I believe only number to be retired by NHL. A lot of players have their number retired by their teams, but his was the first, number 99, to be retired by the League.

He wanted Gordie Howe's number (9) but in juniors the number was taken, so he chose 99. Bulltwinkie

It was because his contract w/ the Oilers was supposed to run until 1999
