NO asterisk on *61 in 61In 1961 8 game was added to the 154 game schedule, extending the season to 162. Ford Frick, a close friend of Babe Ruth, was Commissioner of Major League Baseball in 1961, and proclaimed that if Roger Maris didn't break Babe Ruth single season home run record of 60 in 154 games, the new record would be shown in the record books as being set in 162 games. With all said and done no asterisk was ever used in the "record books" The story of an asterisk being used was made up by the NY press.

Single Season Home Run RecordsRoger Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961 to break Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60 set in 1927. In 1998 Mark McGwire broke the record, and finished the season with 70 home runs. This record only held up until 2001 when Barry Bonds past McGwire, and set a new and current single season home run record with 73.
