In general, light weight is not an advantage in alpine (downhill) skiing. Lighter-weight skis do not dampen vibration as well and can bend or break more easily. This is not to say that the heaviest ski is best, either; a heavy ski means a high swing weight, which forces the skier to work harder to turn. In general, beginner-type skis are both shorter and lighter than skis for advanced skiers, often having a foam core instead of a heavier (and more responsive) wood core.
