Quarter horses are actually faster than thoroughbreds over about a quarter of a mile. While thoroughbreds run about 45-50 mph, quarter horses have been known to run at 55 mph for short periods of time.

Even though I loved Secretariat, Man O'War carried 30 extra pounds in a race to even the odds and he still won by at least 20 lengths.
In 1912 there wasn't a Triple Crown for him to win all three races like there is today.

∙ 11y agoThis would depend on what distance you are travelling. The fastest sprinters are Quarter horses, they can reach speed of 55 MPH over a quarter mile (440 yards). The best middle distance is the Thoroughbred, it can race for a half mile to 4 miles at speed of 45 to 50 MPH. For anything over 4 miles the Akhal-Teke is the fastest and most enduring, they can reach speed near 40 MPH. Arabians are used more often however for endurance racing due to their relative commonness and they are the second fastest over long distances reaching speeds of up to 35 MPH.
