I am a girl gymnast and we do not lift weights we use ankle weights and do like leg lifts rope climbs etc with them on cause in order to be better we need to get stronger But yes in deed at my gym the male gymnasts lift weights cause they need to be (well girls need to be strong to) but male gymnasts need to be stronger And occasionally girl gymnasts do lift weights and male gymnasts use ankle weights Usually you only start (its different at each gym) using ankle weights when you are on team or the compulsory levels. and start lifting weights in the optional levels
The world of gymnastics is generally divided on that issue; some do, some don't, but for the most part weight training is not a part of most gymnastics curriculums. Some WILL strength train, push their bodies extremely hard to stunt their growth; weight training CAN stunt growth, if a child is made to lift weights like a grown adult. Weight training can be beneficial for children, but only if they do a mild form of it, only if they train at 25% intensity, not 120% intensity like pro bodybuilders. Pro bodybuilders will push themselves until their muscles start going numb in the middle of a repetition, they will push, and push, so much, the pain will cause the muscles to go numb. I tried it myself once, and the feeling is indescribably painful when you get to the verge of numbness; the burn is so intense, it feels as if you are experiencing a concentrated cold heat, and someone is stabbing your muscle with an ice pick, and then, total numbness, you feel it moving, and you feel it working, but pretty soon you don't feel anything at all. Pushing kids this way, will stunt their growth, and because small size is desirable to the sport, many do indeed do it so that they don't reach their full adult height. However if the kids are naturally short, and come from short parents, such training is often not done, and like I said for the most part what Gymnasts do is cals specifically geared for Gymnastics. The reason they are built like bodybuilders, is because many of their exercises will place the whole of the body's weight on a single set of small muscle groups. That is, held at the right angle, and on the right muscles, the strain cals can produce can be just as intense as any weight training session, and gymnastics cals are among the most brutal in the sports world.
