A referee can only show cards to players, and since the referee himself is not a player he cannot receive red cards. A referee may remove themselves of their duties if they are unable to continue.

What doses it mean referees give this for serious fouls and the player must leave the game of soccer?

A referee will issue a 'Red Card' for a serious offence in football, or if the player has already been shown a yellow card for a previous foul in the game. Two yellow are automatically red carded. A red card results in the player leaving the pitch, and no substitution is allowed. So the team plays on with one man down. There have been cases when an over excited manager, arguing with the referee, has been shown a red card, and has been sent to sit in the terraces, away from the dugout.

The yellow card stands for warning, which is a reminder to a few players of their faults. If the player or the same side is in misconduct again, the umpire will give a red card, then one point will be awarded to the opponent. In another case, after the umpire showing a red card, if the fouling party continued to foul again, the umpire may apply to the referee for the ejection of it. After the referee verifying it, he would license to a black card to the umpire for the execution of the ejection.

What is the purpose of the cards in a football game?

They are used to give warnings to players and to indicate what kind of warning it is. A yellow card is for a serious offence. If a player gets a second yellow card, they will be sent off. A very serious offence will warrant a red card and the player is sent off immediately. By using cards it makes it easier for the crowds to know what decision the referee has made. Referees often talk to players for various reasons, so the cards help the crowds know when it is a serious issue.
