On September 29, 1954, Mays probably made the greatest game-saving catch in World Series history as the centerfielder of the New York Giants. In Game 1 of the Fall Classic at the Polo Grounds in New York, the Cleveland Indians had runners on first and second in the top of the eighth inning during a 2-2 tie. There were no outs. When Cleveland slugger Vic Wertz hit a towering drive to dead center, Mays immediately began running with his back to the plate and caught the ball with an amazing over-the-head catch near the warning track..

But Mays has always been proudest of his quick whirlaround throw to the infield, which prevented Larry Doby, the Cleveland baserunner on second, from scoring on a sacrifice fly. The Indians failed to score in the inning, and the Giants went on to a 5-2 opening-game win. New York eventually swept Cleveland in four games, and the National League team captured its first world championship since 1933.

What major league baseball players have hit 3 home runs in one game?

Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Eddie Murray, and Rafael Palmeiro. With one exception, every player eligible for election to the Hall of Fame, that has EITHER 500 or more home runs OR 3000 or more hits, has been elected to that honor. Palmeiro has done BOTH -- but might not ever be elected, due to his positive test for steroids, just months after VERY explicitly denying having ever used them.
