A check, or a body check, is when one player hits a player from the opposing team. This can be into the boards or an open ice hit. You cannot hit from behind, hit a player without the puck, lead with the elbow or forearm, leave your feet before contact, take more than a few steps with the intention of hitting the player, or check a player while participating in a non-checking league. Ideally, a check is made with the shoulder, avoids head contact, and is with the intention to separate the player from the puck.
I'm not sure what you mean here, but if you mean countries where hockey is played, there are quite a few, including Canada, USA, Sweden, Russia, etc. For a complete list of countries check the International Ice Hockey Federation website at www.IIHF.com and they have a list of all hockey playing nations.
