Is the height of the skis the same as the rider?

It depends, if you are a real beginner the skis should be about the height chin to lips but if you are a very very very good racer it can be a few cenimeters taller than you. For the average person skis should be between your nose and eyes.

Are parabolic skis the same as shaped skis?

Yes

Do world cup skiers use the same skis as you buy?

Not unless you are a ski racer yourself, and were lucky enough to get top of the line equipment. World Cup skiers get the best race skis that their factory makes. They have many different pairs of the same type (downhill skis, for example) that they will test to see which are the fastest. Race skis are highly specialized and differ greatly from demo skis or skis that the public usually buys. You can see this reflected in the price. Race skis typically run $800-$1000 for the skis, not including bindings.

What size cross country skis for someone 6'1?

That depends a bit. Normal classic skis should be about 6'9. If you go skating they should be 6'5.

Can you replace steel skis on a snowmobile with plastic skis?

What are carving skis?

Before 1990, skis typically had straight parallel edges, i.e. the same width everywhere. Then came along the snowboard, which was able to "carve" easily due to the curved siderails, which made the board narrowest in the middle. This shape made the snowboard easy to turn by tilting it on its edge, and riding this way became known as "carving". To allow skiers to carve with the same ease as snowboarders, the skis were modified to have a shape similar to snowboards: Wide at the ends, and with a narrow width in the middle of these skis. At their introduction, such skis were sold as "carving skis", to differentiate them from the traditional, straight-edge skis. The "carving skis" were indeed easier to turn and learn. They became a big success and generally replaced the older ski design. As a result, today pretty much all skis are "carving skis", and the distinction is not really necessary anymore. SJO

Difference between men's and women's alpine skis?

Women's skis have the waist and binding farther forward compared to men's skis to compensate for women's lower centers of gravity and added weight in the rear. Because of lower weights and lower centers of gravity, women's skis also tend to be more flexible for proper turning. Women's skis are also more dramatically curvy than men's skis to make the ski turn better. On straight skis, man or woman, the rule is, "as tall as you or slightly shorter if you're a beginner, a foot taller if you're advanced or just really good." Longer skis can be dangerous, so you need to know what you're doing. On modern shaped or parabolic skis, beginner skis are around chin-height while advanced skiers may have skis up to their forehead or as tall as the skier. Shorter skis are good for beginners as they give more control and better turning. Longer skis get more speed.

What is the average size of a ski for a grown male?

How long downhill skis must be?

This is another question best answered by a salesperson in one of your local ski shops. This is a question that isdefinitely not a question someone can answer on wikianswers, because skis that are 150cm may be way to long for one person and skis that are 175cm may be way to short for another person. The size of the skis you should buy depends on a lot of things, such as: height, weight, skier ability, and style, power or finesse. For me, skis that are 161 are about right. I am 160lbs, 5'6" (I'm A LOT heavier than I look) I ski aggressively, my style is more towards power, I'm type 3 skier and ski all mountain (I put in the correct info onto a ski calculator and got the length). For comparison I put the same height and weight into the calculator but said the style was more finesse, skier type 1, doesn't ski aggressively, and sticks to groomers and the length this time was 155cm, just goes to show that height and weight are not the only things that matter. This is a fairly good ski length calculator so I will give you the website address, http:/www.frostyrider.com/tips/size-guide-skis.htm (copy and paste into the address bar of your computer). This is a good site but nothing beats the advice of a skier who is trained in helping people find the correct size skis. My best advice would be to go to your local ski shop and ask them, they will be able to answer.

How do you find your ski size?
