Why people say break a leg before getting on stage on the first exibition day?

In the old days, the things that held up the curtains were called "legs". So, saying "break a leg" means you want the person to get so many curtain calls that the leg holding up the curtain breaks.

∙ 10y agoi don't know you personally but most people physically can say "break a leg" to a Ballet dancer but i don't know if you can
however, if you were looking for if it is wrong to say that to a ballet dancer i personally think "good luck' is better for any performer because in some cases of TV "break a leg" has become cliche. i don't think it is completely bad to say that though.
Technically your supposed to say a curse word in french. You don't want to say
"break a leg" or "good luck" because it is considered bad luck.
No, that's considered "hexing" even more than saying "Good Luck." You're just supposed to say "Merde."
We say 'chuckers' haven't got a clue where its from we just do.

∙ 11y agoAges ago, the curtain at a theatre was drawn and opened by something called a leg (a wheel-like handle that you had to turn). At the end of a play, if there was enough cheering, the curtain would be opened again so the actors could take another bow (like an encore but not really). So saying 'break a leg' basically meant 'i hope you are so good that you will be cheered back on stage so much that the handle to open the curtains breaks'.
They believe that wishing 'good luck' before a production will cause it to go wrong, so they say 'break a leg' instead with the same meaning.

∙ 13y agoIt's considered bad luck to wish somebody good luck in the context of a theatrical production. Theatre-types are generally superstitious.
