Because if you over run first it is no big deal. this is because singles in Baseball are alot mor common than doubles and triples. if you overrun second or third then it will look like you are continueing to run to the next base but when you over run first it is obvious that you are staying at frist base.

The main reason is that the purpose of sliding is to get under a tag. All plays at first are force outs, so no tag is needed. Running through a base always gets you there faster than a sliding play, and the players always want to get to first as fast as possible. Sliding may also increase the chance of injury, and players want to avoid getting hurt as much as possible.

A runner can return to first base, however, they must touch second base on their way back. If they fail to touch second base (and run directly to first base without re-tagging second base) they can be called out on appeal. Appeals work as follows: the pitcher takes the mound with the ball, toes the rubber and then steps off and throws the ball to the base the runner did not tag. When the fielder steps on the base the umpire - if they were paying attention - will then call the runner who is now on first base out.

ensue.

When you're already on base, you have the option of leading off of the base. When going to first, you have a disadvantage because you have to follow through with your swing, drop the bat, regain your balance, and run.

You already know ahead of time if you hit a ball through the infield for a base hit, but if the ball is still in the infield, you must run as fast as you can to reach the base before the ball gets there. This is the reason they allow you to overrun first base.

It doesn't take any longer than running from 1B to 2B or from 3B to home. The distance between the bases is the same...90 feet.

The ball is still on play on a dropped-third strike and a runner can attempt to reach first base as long as a runner doesn't occupy first base prior to the dropped pitch.

They try, but it is hard to go into a sprint after facing forward and swinging the bat.
