There is a line at the end of the approach called the 'foul line'. Should any part of your body touch the lane past the foul line, a foul is called and you received 0 pins for that delivery. Not only touching the lane could cause a foul. But if your fingers or hand touch the wall beyond the foul line it is a foul.

If a bowlers commits a foul on their first ball of a frame, it counts as a zero and any pin they knocked down is set back up so that there is a full rack. If there is a foul on the second shot, then it counts as zero and the frame is over.

A foul occurs when I bowler crosses the foul line. The foul line is a black line that is found at the end of the approach just prior to reaching the lane (where the oil is). If you cross this line, then you receive a miss or "0" for that shot.
