You're lucky a Kobe-Hater didn't get to this one before me.
(But let me say this- I like Kobe and Lebron Equally- that's right, I said it. I think they both have an equal chance of becoming the greatest Basketball player ever.)
It comes down to these two.
Every other NBA superstar is only regarded as "the best" by their hometown, by "frontrunners", by complete posers or complete fools. That includes KG, Carmelo, D-wade and others. sizzle.
As for Kobe, he's still pretty young and if he makes a championship run within the next few years, maybe some more incredible scoring performances and playoff buzzer beaters, he could be easily considered on MJ's calibre.
As for Lebron, he's still really young and needs a sidekick on the cavs. We'll have to see how LBJ plays out. sigh. i wish they didn't always triple team him-just doesn't seem fair. oh well, I'll get over myself.
To summarize my answer: yes, Kobe can make himself the next MJ-- (and so can lebron)
Kobe all the way but LeBron has a chance too but maybe after KB retires
