What does fcs stand for in college football?

FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision and FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision. Teams in the FBS, formerly known as Division 1-A, determine their champion via ratings, both human and computer. The two teams that are at the top of the ratings at the end of the season play in the National Championship Game to determine a champion. Other teams high in the ratings play in bowl games (Rose, Orange, Sugar, etc) for huge payoffs that are shared with all teams in the conference the team plays in. Colleges that play in the FBS are large schools (Ohio State, Southern California, Notre Dame, LSU, etc) with large enrollments and large athletic departments Teams in the FCS, formerly known as Division 1-AA, determine their champion via a playoff where the champion must win 4 or 5 playoff games (based on the team's seeding). Colleges that play in the FCS are smaller schools (William and Mary, Eastern Washington, Montana State, Robert Morris, etc) with smaller enrollments and athletic budgets

What is a football bowl subdivision?

The Football Bowl Subdivision is the top level of college football in the United States. The NCAA divided Division I into two subdivisions based on the number of grants-in-aid (also called "scholarships") given to players. Formerly, the division was split into Division I-A and Division I-AA. Those subdivisions were renamed the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), respectively. The FBS concludes the season with a series of bowl games, each team playing a single postseason game with the top two teams meeting in the Bowl Championship Series' (BCS) National Championship Game. The FCS has a single-elimination tournament to determine its champion. FBS teams are allowed to have 85 scholarship players. The FCS has the equivalent of 63 full-ride scholarships, but unlike the FBS, these scholarships may be divided to provide partial scholarships to a number of players beyond the "limit."

What does FSB stand for in college sports?

FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly called Division I-A. This is in contrast to the FCS, or Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. The "Bowl" vs "Championship" refers to how the 2 divisions play their post-season, with the former Division I-A teams playing in bowl games and the former Division I-AA teams playing in a playoff series culminating with a true national championship game.
