Yes.

Some teams have done "retro" uniforms including helmets (partly in tribute, partly as a marketing ploy, I presume). The Cowboys annually have a white helmet with blue star when they wear their retro white and blue jerseys paying homage to the early 60s unis.

When were the first football helmets invented?

In the earliest days of football in the 1860s some players simply tied a bandana around their heads. There weren't even leather football helmets then. In those days there were brutal plays. Players actually trampled on opposing team members, yet there was no protection for players' heads. 18 deaths were reported. The earliest leather football helmets were invented by a Navy player in 1893 after his doctor warned him that one more kick to the head could kill or paralyze him for life. The player asked a local blacksmith to improvise a leather harness hat to protect his head. Thus the first football helmet was born. Soon other players created additional styles of leather football helmets to protect their heads and ears. Styles included the early beehive leather football helmet, the flat-top leather football helmets, and the dogear leather football helmet. The colors began to show up on early 1940s leather football helmets. Before that most helmets were plain natural leather either brown, cordovan, or black. Color leather football helmets allowed the quarterback to better see the receiver at long distances when he was far down the field. So more and more teams began to paint their leather football helmets to put some visibility sizzel into their games. Gradually in the late 1940s the leather football helmet began to be replaced by early plastics. However many of the early plastic football helmets shattered and caused injury. So, the leather football helmet survived through the World War II years and lingered into the early 1950s. Some pooreer high school teams and JR high teams used old leather helmets right into the 1960s and 70s. But gradually the old leather football helmet was replaced by the plastics.

How is today's NFL football different from the first invented football?

It is different because back when it was invented they didn't have many uniforms or coaches to guide them. Also people were discriminating others because of their race and enthical background. So, today football is a whole lot different and has more opportunites. Helmets were optional, made of padded leather, and didn't have facemasks. The goalposts were at the zero yard line instead of the back of the end zone, and players ran into them during play. There was more running and less passing.

Is there a difference between a bull riding helmet and a hockey helmet?

A (gridiron) football helmet is much heavier than an (ice) hockey helmet, and much thicker. A hockey helmet does not have the full ear protection and adjustable padding of gridiron football helmets, so that it is much lighter. A gridiron football helmet is the heaviest of all common helmets, typically weighing around three kilograms or 6.5 pounds. That is even heavier than a typical motorcycle crash helmet. This high mass allows gridiron football helmets to absorb impacts from very fast blockers who typically weigh around 150 kilograms or 340 pounds today and will deliberately and consciously ram into each other during line play trying to protect or sack the quarterback. In contrast, ice hockey helmets - other than those used by goalkeepers - weight around 0.8 kilograms with a plastic face mask and professional models can weigh as little as 350 grams, which is no heavier than a standard bicycle helmet. Ice hockey helmets do not have the thick adjustable padding of gridiron football helmets; instead, they have a thin, flexible polymer inside that absorbs repeated contact not from helmet-to-helmet contact as found in gridiron football, but from high sticks or stray pucks. weetect helmets for hockey

Why aren't pads or helmets necessary in flag football?

Traditionally, helmets are not used in flag football because it is generally believed that, because there is no tackling in football, there will be no risk of head injury. However, with the explosion of concussion and sports-injury related research, that paradigm is beginning to shift. Flag football and 7 v 7 leagues across the country are beginning to implement the use of soft-shell head guards during flag football, so as to protect players' heads. A company called RockSolid has emerged as a front-runner in building patented head guards designed specifically for non-contact football. Their website is LiveRockSolid.com, and they can be found on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook at @RockSolid
