Muhamad Ali, formerly Cassius Marcellos Clay Jr., and it was by self-appointment. The TRUE greatest boxer, at least of the last century, was Sugar Ray Robinson; actual top level prize fighters, boxing fans and experts alike are all unanimous regarding that. Even Muhamad Ali himself once admited, he was the greatest HEAVYWEIGHT of all time, but the greatest BOXER of all time, was Robinson. In his prime, Robinson only lost a total of 4 times (I think; Google it yourself, easy to find), two of those times, because he was sick with the Flu. Even sick with the Flu and barely able to stand, Robinson was lethal as hell in the ring. An old boxing coach I new once, who actually met him, told me I had the same look in my eyes as he did; problem is, Robinson had a lifetime of training, plus he was hardened from a poverty stricken life in New York as a child and teen. In other words he told me to stay the hell away from the ring; my potential goes sadly unfulfilled..... Also, I'm not bragging; he pulled no punches when it came to telling me I wouldn't survive in there (a pro boxing ring). "What might have been" and what actually is are two different things.
