Well, I imagine that most football games and probably most sports carry similar stories and situations.

It is virtually impossible to answer such a question ... the main reason being that many retire if they are not meeting 'expectations' after a few years. So many players might be good enough to make a few games each season, but realize by 23 or 24 that they are never going to amount to regularity as a top professional; so they hang up the professional boots quite early. Others play well and make the side regularly, but injuries cut their careers short, and they might have to stop during their 20's. I had a friend making the top league Seconds team at 20, but had to stop due to injury.

The only thing that might be accurately claimed is that footballers in the AFL game are mostly finishing sooner today than 30 or 40 years ago because of the harder, longer training in today's game and because the game is faster than it used to be.

However, if a good senior player is able, many of them will play into their 30's.
