He began playing tennis at the age of 3 with his uncle Toni Nadal, a former tennis player. At age 8, Nadal won an under12 regional tennis championship. He also won the Spanish and European tennis titles in his age group.At 15, he won his first ATP match, and became the 9th player in the Open Era before the age of 16.
His uncle was a tennis coach at a local tennis club in Spain and Nadal joined the group he was teaching. He had raw talent and soon began taking private lessons with his uncle to improve at a faster pace.
He turned pro in 2001. His first big match was against Roger Federer in Miami 2004 R32 where he prevailed in straight sets 6-3 6-3.
