* Pawn first move = can move either one space or two spaces directly forwards. * Pawn subsequent move - one space directly forwards * Pawn capture - to the square up one and to either the left or right. * Pawn capture en passents - can be done only when a pawn in on the fifth row and an opposing pawn on his first move moves two spaces directly beside the advanced opponents pawn. In this case and only on the first opportunity the pawn captures as if the opponents pawn had moved only one space. * pawn promotion - on reaching the eighth row a pawn can be changed to any peice providing it is of the same colour and is not a pawn or a king. * -----------------All other pieces capture as they move.----------------------- * Kinght - two (up or back) and one over(right or left), or, two over(right or left) and one (up or back). The knight cannot be blocked by pieces in its way. * Castle - and number of spaces forwards backwards or sideways but only one direction at a time. * Bishop- Any number of spaces on the diagonals. A bishop cannot change the colour of the spaces it occupies. * Queen - either as a castle or as a bishop but only one kind at a time. * King - as a queen but only one space at a time. * King side castling - Neither the king or the king's side castle have move previously, All the spaces in between the king and castle must be vacent, no space between king and castle can be under the control of an enemy piece. The castle moves up beside the king and the king hops over it to the space immediately on the other side of the castle. * Queen side castling - exactly the same as for King side castling except that it is done with the queen's side castle. * Lying down the King - admitting defeat

Well, you can castle, which moves your king closer to the side and your rook closer to the battle. You can only castle if: You are on rank 1 if white or rank 8 if black; You have not moved your King or rook at all; You do not cross or land on a square guarded by the opponet. There are 2 types of castling; Kingside and Queenside. The king only moves 2 squares and the rook goes next to him on the other side. Move the king first. If you move your rook first, they will think you are not trying to castle. (I learned this the hard way.) There is also capturing en passant. You do it if your pawn is on the 5th rank and a pawn from the opponet moves 2 spaces and lands next to you. Capture it as if it moved 1 square. You can only do it if it is on the move directly after that. Whether you consider as being a 'special' move the option to move a pawn forward one space or two on its first move is up to you. The other special move arises when a pawn has moved completely across the board to a square on the opponent's back row. At this point the pawn can be 'exchanged' for any piece (not just a piece that the opponent has captured), and can result in a player having, for example, two queens on the board.
