It is a matter if proven fact that William Tilden, famous tennis pro- and later an instructor, was prosecuted and found guilty- did time in jail, for child molestation of one of his students. the case happened in the early postwar period and rocked Tennis as this was a major sex scandal. the Judge was shocked how such a positive role model type could go bad, but sentenced him harshly. Tilden was known to have been a (Mama"s Boy) as a child. As far as was known he was never either married or romantically associated with women, the bad side came out, in a child molesting rap. Had this happened in California, he might have been literally Gassed- as in certain conditions forcible rape of a minor-and possibly homosexual crimes were classed as capital punishment offenses in the Golden State. Under this statute Caryl Chessman was executed, although he never took a human life.
