Some parents are, in fact, cruel to their children. However, most parents have their children's best interests in mind. While they may do things that the child doesn't like, the parents do it because they know it will benefit the child in some way.

Parents are not mean. Discipline means they care for you, even if sometimes it seems harsh or unnecessary. Kids don't know or understand as much as parents, who have experienced many more years of life's problems and difficulties. For example, if a mother says "Put on your coat," kids might think "Mom, stop!" - but worrying about your health (catching cold) is her primary concern.
