Make sure to check the ball size and hitch size are the same first. Other then that yes, it just means the ball can withstand less weight then the receiver hitch.

deepends on the trailer.. It could be a ball sixe of: 1 7/8" 2" 2 5/16" It could be a Class I, II, or III style hitch.
It should be stamped on the hitch but it may be covered with someones paint job. It could be 1 7/8", 2" or 2 5/16".
Today most are 2 inch but some older ones have 1 7/8 inch
